The Wizard of Oz crossed my career path several times at two companies. He can best be described as a pompous ass whose ego should have had its own zip code.

I first worked with Oz at a business management software company in the Sacramento area (I will call them Monks Software)1. He was one of the two system programmers. I took a job as a customer support engineer dealing with system level installations and problems. Monks didn't have all of the computer brands of our customers (Sun, IBM, DEC, HP, MIPS, AT&T, etc.), so the software was loaded and compiled on our customers' Unix systems.

Oh, sometimes he didn't remember what he told you to do and would chide you when you did exactly that, but he was a "mensch" - a decent human being.

Big D was the nephew of one of the founders of a company I worked for in the Sacramento area. He had just graduated with a BSEE from Texas A & M and, like a typical 22 year-old, he knew everything about everything, or so he thought. He may have understood a little something about hardware, but he didn't have a clue about the software development process or management. And, of course, the upper management of the company made him a software manager. Nepotism: the great enemy of the start-up company.

Deep down I knew I was making a mistake, but the project The Lyre proposed in his slick, soft-spoken manner was so interesting that I could not resist. He assured me that he would be "the best boss I ever had." That was his first lie.
